Our government understands that climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing the world today, and that is why in October 2016, we announced a bold plan to put a national price on carbon.
Carbon pricing has proven to be an innovative and effective way to encourage people and corporations to pollute less and work towards creating a low-carbon, robust economy. With a national price on carbon, provincial and territorial governments will have more resources to make positive environmental and economic impacts on communities like ours. New revenue will help to lower our taxes, support our workers and families, and encourage investment in innovative businesses that create good jobs for the middle class.
Here in British Columbia, we know putting a price on carbon works. B.C.’s carbon pricing model has been praised as an environmental and economic success around the world, and for good reason.
Our community is one of many in British Columbia that has seen a reduction in fuel consumption, a boom in renewable energy and clean tech investment, and a business community that is empowered to take steps to reduce its collective carbon footprint.
As your voice on climate action in Ottawa, I am passionate about the role that communities like ours have in the fight against climate change. I understand that global leadership starts at the community level, and I support our government’s historic action to put a transparent and predictable price on carbon to help ensure that our community, and communities across Canada are inspired to create a clean, green world for us and future generations.
