The Future is Clean Technology

Touring General Fusion in Burnaby with my collegue MP Greg Fergus, who served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development

In BC, we understand that a strong economy and a clean environment go hand-in-hand. This is why our Government is investing in major clean technology projects right across Canada.

Burnaby’s General Fusion is developing technology that targets the lowest cost path to commercial fusion power, a process that produces energy with zero emissions and no waste. This growing company was awarded $12.75 million by Sustainable Development Technology Canada with the goal of designing a full-scale fusion energy demonstration plant.

Inventys, another Burnaby-based high-growth company, was awarded $3.1 million to develop the next generation of CO2 adsorbents. It is amazing to know that so many leaders in the clean technology space are growing so quickly in our community, laying the groundwork to make us the home for the industries and jobs of the future.

We aren’t just investing in today’s leaders, but also in the leaders of tomorrow. I joined the Prime Minister in announcing the $90 million investment in Simon Fraser University’s newest facility that will include its Energy Systems and Environmental Engineering Program.

It is essential that Canadian companies punch above their weight in the emerging global market for clean technology. We will continue to put in place the tools that Canadians need to grow companies, create jobs, and secure long-term prosperity.
