Making post-secondary more affordable

On a personal level, I understand the financial burden that obtaining a post-secondary education places on students and their families. I know I never would have had the chance to access post-secondary without the help of grants and scholarships. That is largely why, for 13 years, my brother and I ran a nonprofit where we talked to over 25,000 students about how to best access post-secondary education. I am glad to see the government increase federal student grants by 50 percent; a move that will help over 350,000 students who need it most. This means that for many of the full-time, low-income, Simon Fraser University students in our community, the available student grant amounts have increased from $2,000 to $3,000 per year. We want to make sure all young people can achieve their potential, and we believe helping students get access to post-secondary education is an enormous step forward.

CanCode: digital skills for students

As the demand for new skills is constantly changing, we need to make sure that Canada is at the forefront. That is why we have introduced the $50 million CanCode program. Over the next two years, CanCode will give 500,000 students across the country from kindergarten to Grade 12 the opportunity to learn in-demand digital skills. As part of our Innovation and Skills Plan, this is a long-term focused investment that will set kids in our community up for the tech industry boom that is sweeping the Lower Mainland. I certainly remember when I was in high school, the digital and animation phenomenon was just taking off. Who knew back then that the Lower Mainland would grow to become a global leader in animation? We want to make sure that young Canadians are prepared, and have the opportunities to succeed in the growing digital economy.

Canada Summer Jobs

Good jobs for students and recent grads today

This year, we’ve more than doubled the funding, and subsequently doubled the enrollment for the Canada Summer Jobs program from a base of $107.5 million per year, to $220.5 million. In a job market where even entry level position requires related experience, this program is helping many students and recent graduates in our community get valuable skills training. Canada Summer Jobs is also providing businesses in our community with hard-working, enthusiastic summer workers. It’s a win-win!

As your Member of Parliament, part of my responsibility is to contribute to civic education in our community. I am happy to visit any classroom in our constituency to speak about Parliament and the democratic process in Canada.

All youth, regardless of their social or economic background, should be empowered to succeed and lead purposeful lives as engaged members of society. I have been engaged in education as a university adjunct professor, and as the founder of a non-profit educational organization.

For school visits, I work with teachers and professors to tailor my lessons to your class’s level of education. From elementary school social studies classes to university lectures, I can focus on specific topics of interest to your class.
